i’m sitting in an airport in frankfurt germany. on
layover before we jet down to South Africa. the layover has turned
more into a lay (all) over (the airport) sort of thing. there are
bodies everywhere: piled outside of the duty free, crammed in the
corner of lounges, shelling out too many Euros for tiny Big Macs, and
shovelling down Hagen-Das down on floor number 1. I passed out on top
of my bags for an hour or so, woke up with the pattern of the airport
floor etched into my back. that was an exciting discovery.
we have been here a lot of hours. 11 to be exact I think,
with a few more to go. took a shower in the airport – first hot shower
i’ve had in a week and a half or so, that was good. our flight leaves
in four more hours or so, at that point we will have been here 13
hours. yes, I know that math doesn’t really add up, but i don’t have
much of a desire to do math right now.
the past week has been incredible. i have gotten to know my
team
pretty well, well enough that even with all of this jet lag and empty
time on our hands we still seem to get along. there are 13 girls, 2
guys, a married couple leading from the states, and a married couple of
missionaries that we will meet once we get to South Africa. i’m
excited to see the ways that we come together around the work laid out
for us in South Africa…. after we all get some sleep.
if
you live somewhere north of Georgia in the USA I probably “flew over
your house last night” (and i use that phrase very, very loosely). we
came pretty close to Elon, and I got to watch the coast from D.C. and
the Chesapeake Bay (which is bigger than I thought) all the way up to
Maine. the sky was incredibly clear until we hit the Atlantic, at
which point I fell asleep to Mr. Bean’s hot new movie.
europe
is expensive and germans are pushy. that’s a bit of a generalization,
but it seems true at least in this wing of the airport. i watched a
man drink a Guinness with his breakfast this morning at 7:50 in the
Goethe Cafe. that was a real help to my appetite and made me laugh.
