Song-Title Super Giveaway!
I like the idea of titling my blog with song titles.  We’ll see how long it lasts.  I’ll make it even more interesting.  The first one to post the original artist of the song will win a prize.  A very good prize.  [You can challenge a winner by listing two artists who have covered the song (but this will only win if I like the cover version better than the original)].  I hope all of that was clear.  This week is easy (see figure 1-a)

Training Camp III
I am in Georgia right now at training camp, for the third time in one year.   Right now its just us leaders, sleeping in plywood cabins, showering with garden hoses, being beckoned to meals by a dinner bell.  We’re being trained so that we can better lead for the next nine months.  Its been fun to see old friends and to get to know the leadership team for my trip.  I’ll update more once the participants get here.

Speedy Delivery?

A few people have asked for my African mailing address, so I figured I’d post it here:

I love mail. [I also love Mr. Rogers (see figure 2-a)]. Nothing makes strange days feel like Christmas more than a package or letter.  I’ve been mailed everything from music boxes and children’s books, to letters written in mirror image and a single sudoku puzzle (and I don’t even do sudoku puzzles).  One thing: if you do send packages, and they ask you to specify the value of the contents, specify the contents to be as close to $0.00 as possible.  It makes things a little cheaper on my end – as we have to pay a tax to pick up packages.

(the phrase “speedy delivery” is merely a tribute and a joke.  it will probably take a long time.)

  1. Matt,

Love your pic with the adorable little girl. You even look good next to her.

Blessings on you, my brother. I will be praying. fbs

  2. I think the song written way back in the 1930s by Stuart Gorrell (lyrics) and Hoagy Carmichael (music). But my guess is that you like the Ray Charles cover the best, maybe followed closely by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s versions. I don’t know, maybe you like the Van Morrison version, but to me it just didn’t fit. Anyway, the only prize I want is to hear a hey from you. That’s the best prize a little brother could give.

Oh, and it makes me happy to know how happy you are, because I see you got to have lunch with Milton.

We’ll be praying for you, little bro, and I’m excited to hear the new segments of God’s exploits through your willing life.

    Miss you, kid!

  3. Ray charles is the original artist of this song But there have been many covers of this song but if I know you its going to have to be from The Band that covered this song as well.

  4. Matt,

Thanks for the prayer update. We pray for you often.

All I can do is to confirm what your sister wrote about “Georgia On My Mind” and add a bit more trivia from Wikipedia.

“Georgia on My Mind” is a song written in 1930 by Stuart Gorrell (lyrics) and Hoagy Carmichael (music). It is the official state song of the U.S. state of Georgia. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy’s sister, Georgia Carmichael [1]. However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to be referring either to the state or to a woman named “Georgia.” Carmichael’s 1965 autobiography, Sometimes I Wonder, records the origin: a friend suggested: “Why don’t you write a song called ‘Georgia?’ Nobody lost much writing about the South.”

The song is perhaps best known as sung by Ray Charles, who recorded the song in 1960 on the album The Genius Hits the Road. It became Georgia’s state song in 1979.

  5. Just thought I would leave a comment on the old blog thingy lol. I wanted to let you know I am praying for you. Praise Him for giving you a heart to serve his people and old J-Bay. I am pumped to hear stories of the new teams and how much God is at work and alive in their hearts. I pray that they will continue to bring his heart and love to those precious kids in J-Bay. Enjoy going back to a place I am sure feels very like home to you. God bless
